I was just thinking of other sports, such as open wheel racing (ie. Indy cars), which has managed to move forward retaining most of the excitement, and yet has made it much safer for the racers at the same time.
Granted any sport where your simply hanging on by your hands is going to be dangerous, but they could make the tracks a bit more technical and get the speeds down. For example, that whoops section where Reed crashed doesn't need to be that long.
Heck these guys are the pros , have the best equipment and setups, and with regularity are ending up with injuries that will follow them for the rest of their life.
Racing to me is not simply who can go the fastest, but someone who shows skill and smarts in getting the job done. Just look at the difference between Stewart and Villopoto. One can simply go fast, the other knows how to race.
